Brother Steve Kinn was the keynote speaker at the EHSS conference. His talk covered challenges and benefits of AI in the EHSS profession. He covered the definition of AI and how it can be applied in the EHSS profession. And, how to maximize AI as a tool in the day to day work of the EHSS professional.
He also covered the benefits of AI utilization in the EHSS field. Including the proactive monitoring key systems/processes, key operational alerting, workplace safety detection, equipment proactive risk modeling, data analysis with pattern identification, security monitoring, workflow monitoring and improvements, work safety oversight, predictive pattern analytics, creating training materials, testing safety scenarios, and report development, and hazard detection - to name a few.
While AI is already having an impact and that impact will grow exponentially in the EHSS field however, he cautioned that AI is still young. Steve noted that AI can be misleading or incorrect depending on how it is used cautioning that its use and source for data needs to be monitored. And, the technology is moving faster than the businesses that are using them - one of the first steps is to ensure that a governance structure is in place.
Steve expanded on the importance of having a governance structure around the use of AI. Whether you know it or not - AI is an organization wide information system - your staff is already using it. And, if don’t have guidelines, goals, policies/procedures, and overall governance you are at risk. The AI evolution requires goals, oversight, and use guidelines. This ensures that the use of the AI systems in a organization are sanctioned, supported, and focused to specific purpose or goals.
The topic of AI and its impact in the EHSS field hit the audiences target need. They audience clearly appreciated the presentations by several of the expert speakers in the EHSS field. This was evident by the conference participants questions and additional discussion in each conference session.
A big thank you to Brother Steve Kinn for allocating the time and presenting at this important event. And a acknowledgement to the University of Findlay - EHSS department, Dr. Kim Lichtveld for her leadership in bringing this type of event to the University and the regional community.
